Midtown Grill Leeds

Last week I was invited to try out Midtown Grill, the restaurant attached to The Marriott Hotel in Leeds. When I got the email I was surprised – I didn’t actually know there was a restaurant attached to the hotel, even though I’d stayed there in the past. After a bit of memory jogging, I vaguely remembered seeing a sign pointing to Midtown Grill on a trip to 1871, a bar on Boar Lane that is also attached to both the hotel and the restaurant itself. (Who knew!) I was also offered a plus one so, naturally, I brought Joe along so we could both blog about our experience.

Having never even heard of Midtown Grill before (like a lot of people, apparently!) I didn’t really know what to expect. Obviously with ‘grill’ in the name I expected meat, but that was as far as my assumptions went. It turns out that it is a specialist steak restaurant (obviously with other bits on the menu, mainly other meats and seafood, and some vegetarian options) that brings an air of New York to the centre of Leeds.

When we arrived I was a bit gobsmacked, it’s such a grand setting with a lot of low hanging lights, exposed bulbs, chesterfield booths and jazz music playing in the background. We instantly felt extremely classy, which is always what I’m after when going somewhere for a nice meal. We were seated in a booth and talked through the menu with one of the most fantastic and attentive members of staff I’ve ever come across in a restaurant before. (I’ve forgotten her name, but she was an absolute delight!)

After a LOT of deliberating, I decided upon the duck scotch egg for my starter and the confit duck leg for my main. Yep – double duck. I didn’t want to get duck for both courses but in the end I didn’t care, I was craving them both so much! And I’m SO glad I made the decision I did because both dishes were absolutely stunning. The duck scotch egg was a duck egg, coated in duck meat and breacrumbed. It was presented beautifully on a bed of salad, pomegranate and fresh figs (I know. My mouth is watering just writing this.) and honestly I can’t even tell you how amazing it was. And the confit duck leg – OH MY GOD. Cooked to absolute perfection. It came with potato fondant, curly kale, black cherries and a garlic puree and I practically inhaled it it was so tasty.

Joe ordered the starter of the day which in this case was pork belly with crispy pancetta. I VERY nearly got this for myself, but we’d already agreed to get something different for each course (we have this habit of ordering exactly the same thing wherever we go). I did get a taste though and let me tell you – it was gorgeous. And it was presented so beautifully! He got the fillet steak with a bone marrow bordelaise and he was in love with it. I’m not a steak lover so I passed on a taste, but he was very impressed indeed.

A little note as well, just as we’d finished taking photos of the mains (#bloggerlife) the chef came over to ask if everything was okay and to talk us through our food. An absolutely amazing touch that I thought was just for us as we were reviewing the restaurant, but after a nosey around she went to a few other tables as well so it must be a regular occurrence. I literally can’t big up this restaurant enough.

We were both so stuffed, but when the dessert menus landed on our table we couldn’t refuse. I knew straight away what I was getting – the chocolate tart with white chocolate ice cream. I’m a real chocoholic so if there’s anything like that on a menu I will be all over it. It was so well presented (again!), so rich and the white chocolate ice cream really lifted the whole thing and lightened it. If I wasn’t so full from my duck feast I would have ordered two more. Joe decided upon the cinder toffee cheesecake after the waitress recommended it and it was an amazing choice for him. It came with a gorgeously thick and rich toffee sauce and a vanilla ice cream. I tried a bit of the cheesecake and holy crap it was divine. Like seriously gorgeous.

I practically had to be rolled out of the restaurant but it was so worth it. It was such a wonderful night! The restaurant was beautiful, the food was out of this world and the staff were just faultless. We were made to feel so at home and nothing was too much. If you don’t know about Midtown Grill then I think it’s time you get acquainted.

Don’t forget, you can find me in all these places too!
